That's the best painting I've seen in ages. I'm going to have nightmares for weeks now. What is it called, and who made it?

I don't know. The gallery was closed at the time. I loved it too, so I took the picture through the window. It's for sale in downtown Washington DC though.

It's for sale!? You have got to buy it. Dental health can wait.

Well, we'll see. Everyone might think I'm a bit odd to drive south 11 hours to buy a painting that reminds me of Chewbacca.

Yeah, but they'll see the error of their ways when they come visit your place and see it hanging unassumingly on your living room wall between the star-shaped clock and a photo of the dog :)

You remember that scene from the Royal Tenenbaums when Chas visits Eli and sits on the couch under the Miguel Calderon "monster men" painting? It'll be just like that.

Look, if you're going to be an academic (in the Humanities, no less), you're going to need to cultivate some eccentricities. 11 hours and few thousand dollars is a small price to pay for a dubious reputation.

Oh, I already have a taxedermist's stuffed vulture for this purpose. I've told my wife that as soon as I make tenure, I'm going to grow a long beard and start doing hallucinagens.
