Here's an amazing exhibit at the Library of Congress- The Russian Empire in color photographs.Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii took the photos for Tsar Nicolas II and developed his own technique for making color photographs. They're gorgeous pictures from the last years of Tsarist Russia.

These pictures never seem to lose the power to make my brain squeal. I've no doubt I'd be overwhelmed to see them in person. Remarkably, that method of color photography seems to have nothing whatsoever to do with the Eastman/Kodak process that was developed later, and somewhere else.
We have a friend who developed an incredible way of making art in which he takes a Polaroid with the lens cap on, so that he gets a black Polaroid, and then removes layers of color to sketching his pictures. Then he blows the pictures up to wall size. He ends up getting these effects that I've never seen before. I'll try to post some here if he'll let me photograph them.
