When I see things like this, I always have to wonder what is the rationale for not building that way any more. Aesthetically, that is. Surely it is possible to build a structure with integrity AND grace. It must be.

Oh, in France they just patch up the old ones every few years with concrete. That thing's probably from the 1920s. Half of Gardanne looks like it was made of sand and twigs in the Middle Ages.

But, to get to your comment, I have no idea why they don't still build them like that. They certainly do in Williamsburg- in fact, they have a copywritten brick pattern there. Elsewhere, nope. In France, they just never build anything new.
