Vermeer- View of Delft

In line with the postings on Proust, here's Vermeer's View of Delft, a painting that comes up repeatedly in À la recherche du temps perdu.

I love this painting, it strikes me as sort of uncritical and affectionate.

If I recall correctly, it was among the harbingers of an era of documentary art (rather than idealized or narrative). In a way, it sort of presaged photography--it is more or less a snapshot.

Was it really? It's funny- I don't know why, but I find it very affecting, even though it's so straightforward. Maybe it's because it is like a snapshot of a long gone world.
