Plenty of people go and get married in the courthouse, and get all of the legal rights involved. I don't really see where you can limit the legal definition under a secular government.

As for the religious definition, I don't think you could force the Churches to perform the ceremonies, if they have religious reservations and we believe in religious freedom, but so what? Here in Canada, the Catholics won't marry gays and the Unitarians will, and everyone stays out of each other's way. I'm all for tolerating each other's beliefs.

I forgot all about the Hedwig song. I'll see if I can dig that up.rufusnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10166090.post-60511072136945941442010-01-07T09:13:53.994-08:002010-01-07T09:13:53.994-08:00Yeah, that's true. But, I think there were peo...Yeah, that's true. But, I think there were people who fit the current terms, which was sort of what I was getting at, right? I mean, there were penguins before Admiral Bird (was it Bird?) discovered them. My feeling is that the terms and concepts have changed, but it's probably safe to guess that the Ding-an-sich has always been there. I would definitely say that "sexual identity" is much more recent and, since it seems to come in hundreds of different flavours, not exactly a helpful category.Rufushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17762279210783841414noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10166090.post-37474302833802241212010-01-07T08:47:33.998-08:002010-01-07T08:47:33.998-08:00What's even more interesting (to me) about all...What's even more interesting (to me) about all this is that the concept, and indeed the TERMS homosexual and heterosexual weren't used until Victorian times, when it became necessary to, you know, establish more societal boundaries. So, rolling back the clock to the Greeks in an effort to analyze something FAR more recent is kind of funny to me.Hollyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10593117152792976823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10166090.post-61340631817858750392010-01-07T08:33:24.602-08:002010-01-07T08:33:24.602-08:00What, no Hedwig video? What, no Hedwig video?Greg von Winckelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00187475294800057360noreply@blogger.com
